Indians clean up in Greco-Roman wrestling Tuesday, 05 October 2010 16:20 India's wrestlers swept all before them on Tuesday with crushing victories in every weight category to win three golds on the opening day of their Commonwealth Games campaign.

Ravinder Singh, Sanjay and Anil Kumar produced ruthless displays in the Greco-Roman division at the Indira Gandhi sports complex, beating their final opponents without conceding a single point between them.

Crowd favourite Singh brought the house down with India's first gold, seeing off Terrence Bosson of England in the final of the men's 60kg category.

"This event was introduced for the first time at these Games and I'm the first Indian who won gold in it," said Singh, who said the crowd, which numbered just a few hundred inside the 7,000-capacity venue, were a "huge support".

"There was no pressure as I was performing in front of my home crowd," he added.

Sanjay, who goes by just one name, won the men's 74kg, beating Richard Addinall of South Africa to pick up his country's second gold.

"From the bottom of my heart, I'm really happy," Sanjay said. "This has always been my dream. I'm thankful to my coach and to my parents. I'd like to dedicate this gold medal to my countrymen."

Sanjay described Addinall as a "really tough" opponent after winning the bout 2-0, adding: "He hit me really hard."

India completed their clean sweep when Kumar beat Hassene Fkiri of Australia in a controversial 96kg final.

Fkiri was disqualified after dangerous play and making an obscene gesture to the judges.

The fiery Australian was stripped of his silver medal after holding his middle finger up at the judges.

Australian coach Kuldi Bassi said: "The Indian (Kumar) upset him a bit and was pulling his neck. I told him that was what was going to happen and I think he just lost control. It's very sad and it's bad for the country."

An official told AFP the Australian was given his marching orders as he made the rude gesture, but may have been disqualified for a third "throat infringement" seconds earlier as he was losing 6-0.

Kumar said: "I'm really glad that I did something for my country."

The victories were a welcome boon for Indian wrestling, which has been mired in a drugs scandal which sent shockwaves through the team's training camp.

The team was plunged into controversy after four wrestlers including gold prospect Rajiv Tomar failed dope tests and were suspended earlier this month.

Posterboy Sushil Kumar, a national star after winning the world 66kg category in Moscow, is expected to be a big draw when he first steps on the mat on Sunday.

Gurdial Singh Mander, president of the Indian Wrestling Federation, predicted Kumar would lead India to a haul of at least half the Commonwealth Games gold medals available

Aussie wrestler to apologise for zap sign

Australian grappler Hassene Fkiri will return to the Commonwealth Games wrestling venue on Wednesday to apologise for the single finger gesture that cost him a silver medal.

The Tunisian-born wrestler raised his middle finger at officials after being disqualified from a gold medal bout against Indian Anil Kumar in Greco-Roman wrestling on Tuesday.

Despite the disqualification from the bout, he would still have been assured of a silver medal had he not made the gesture.

“Fkiri will today visit the wrestling venue to personally apologise for his actions to the opponent, referee, judges and officials involved,” said Australia team spokesperson John Gatfield.

Fkiri will be restricted to the athletes’ village for the rest of his time at the ‘friendly Games’ and on his return to Australia has agreed to undertake community service with young wrestlers once a week for a year.

“The athlete acknowledged that he had been wrong,” Gatfield added.

“He is 36 years old and has never shown any unsportsmanlike behaviour ever.

“He represented Tunisia in the Sydney Olympics and was so determined to win gold for his new country Australia that he lost it.”

Gatfield said no formal warning had been given to other athletes in the team on how to conduct themselves.

“The Australian athletes know how to behave. We don’t expect it to happen again.”

Barnes Finishes Eighth at NCAA Championships
March 21, 2009 Senior Heinrich Barnes finished eighth at 149 pounds.

St. Louis, Mo. - Senior Heinrich Barnes (Pretoria, South Africa) came up short in the seventh place match on Saturday morning, taking eighth at the 2009 NCAA Wrestling Championships.

No. 10 Kyle Borshoff controlled the seventh place match at 149 pounds, scoring a takedown and earning back points early in the first period. Barnes chalked up the escape in the second period, but Borshoff added a pair of points in the third period on an escape and riding time to take a 9-1 major decision.

Barnes becomes the first All-American since 2007 when Ty Watterson finished fourth at heavyweight, and he garners the 83rd honor for Oregon State.

Barnes was the only wrestler at 149 pounds to be named an All-American that was not a national top 12 seed.

Ons sou nie een kon groet vir wie ons so lief was nie.”
